Tanya Quist, Ph.D.

Presenter Bio: Tanya Quist received degrees in horticulture science and a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from Purdue University where she studied the physiological and genetic regulation of plant stress response. This background informs her work in instruction as an Associate Professor of Practice in the School of Plant Sciences where she teaches plant propagation, plant biology, plant physiology, and introduction to urban horticulture. In her role as Director of the University of Arizona Campus Arboretum, Tanya provides university leadership relating to landscape curation, plant selection, and other sustainable landscape management practices. The arboretum program also aims to promote both by example and through outreach activities, the application of university science on campus and in other urban landscapes throughout the state.

How to Safely Work in Trees When Bees are Present (Pest Management Workshop)  |  Anne LeSenne, MS, The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension Pinal County

Training on how Arborists can safely work in trees if they find a bee swarm/colony in the tree needing work, as well as keeping pollinators safe from pesticide exposure and why that's important.

Anne LeSenne, MS

Presenter Bio:  Anne LeSenne is currently the Assistant Horticulture Extension Agent for Pinal County Arizona through the University of Arizona. She has a master’s degree in Horticulture from Texas Tech University and a bachelor’s degree in Horticulture from Brigham Young University Idaho. Anne became a certified arborist with ISA in 2006 and has also been a Municipal Specialist and TRAQ certified for a few years. She became a Board-Certified Master Arborist in 2017. She has specialized in Tree Preservation during and after construction and prepared numerous Tree Mitigation reports which included collecting data on over 30,000 native oak trees in California. She has been an Expert Witness in Tree litigation cases for both defense and prosecution lawyers. She taught Horticulture related classes at two community colleges in the Portland Oregon area for a decade including Plant Identification, Pesticides, Landscape Design, and Beekeeping. She was the driving force behind one of those colleges becoming certified as a Tree Campus USA, and then maintained the certification for six years. She now lives and works in the low desert of Arizona and is working to help more people get ISA trained and certified. She volunteers on the Arizona Community Tree Council board and the advisory board of Trees Matter who are working to increase the tree canopy of Phoenix.

Safe Herbicide Application: Protecting Trees, Woody Plants, and Applicators  |  Frank Saldaña,  Arbor Tech, Inc.

This presentation will focus on best practices and safety guidelines concerning herbicide application by applicators relating to trees and woody plants. Discussion points will be the Importance of safe herbicide application, types of herbicides, interpreting labels, and understanding safety data sheets (SDS).  The importance of proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), regulatory compliance, and record keeping will also be discussed.  Additionally, we will cover the importance of assessing plant health prior to application.

Incorporating Pesticides into a Successful IPM (Integrated Pest Management) Program  |  Matt Halldorson, University of Arizona

A review of how to use pesticides in a manner that considers the principles of integrative pest management for trees, shrubs, vines, and other plants.

Presenter Bio:  Matt Halldorson is the University of Arizona consumer horticulture agent for Yavapai County and programmatic viticulture agent for the state of Arizona.  As consumers and farmers are continually looking for new, less invasive methods of pest control, one of Matt's program foci revolves around Integrative Pest Management, which aims to reduce, though not necessarily remove pesticide use by stakeholders.

Rebecca Senior

Presenter Bio:  Rebecca Senior works for the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension in Maricopa County, as an Assistant in Extension. She is an ISA Certified Arborist and maintains a Tree Risk Assessment Qualification.

She recently changed her position at the Cooperative Extension to coordinating the Smartscape training program. Working to help landscape professionals face the challenges of maintaining beautiful landscapes and conserving our resources is important and deeply satisfying to Rebecca.

She is passionate about igniting curiosity for the natural world, supporting the urban forest, and enlisting co-creators of more livable cities.

Protecting the Urban Forest from Invasive Insects | Maddie Burton,  Arizona Department of Forestry & Fire Management

An update on invasive insects throughout Arizona, and which ones we should be looking for and what to do if they are spotted.

Maddie Burton

Presenter Bio:  Maddie is the Urban and Community Forestry Program Manager with the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management. She has been with the State since May of 2023, where she focuses on urban forestry grant administration, arboriculture technical assistance, and education. She is an ISA Certified Arborist and holds a degree in Natural Resource Management. Prior to working with the State, she was the City Forester for a municipality in East Texas.
