About the Role

We're seeking a skilled licensed Spray Technician to join our team! As a Spray Technician, you'll play a crucial role in maintaining healthy, attractive, and weed-free landscapes for our valued clients. This position requires expertise in applying herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers, as well as the ability to identify and communicate landscape issues efficiently and safely.

What You'll Do

  • Apply herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers 

  • Calibrate and maintain spraying equipment

  • Mix chemicals according to specifications and safety guidelines

  • Identify pest problems and plant diseases

  • Adhere to local and state regulations for chemical application

  • Maintain accurate records of applications and chemical usage

  • Perform basic landscape maintenance tasks as needed

  • Operate vehicles and equipment safely

  • Communicate effectively with clients and team members

  • Work in hot outdoor conditions typical of Phoenix climate

  • Follow safety protocols and wear appropriate protective equipment

  • Stay updated on industry best practices and new products

What We're Looking For

  • 1-2 years of experience in vegetation management

  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record

  • Current and valid certification from the AZ Department of Agriculture in Turf & Ornamental (C1 Category/C6 Right of Way, or both)

  • Strong identification skills for turf, weeds, shrubs, trees, and landscape-related pests

  • Ability to drive and operate a truck and trailer with spray equipment

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (sometimes more with equipment assistance)

  • Proficient in operating hand and power tools, as well as motor vehicles

  • Good vision, including close and distant vision, color distinction, and depth perception

Working Conditions

DESCRIPTION

This position helps to oversee the daily operations of the Parks Maintenance Technicians in Urban Forestry.  It requires the ability to problem solve and exercise appropriate judgment in the full scope of operations procedures, policies, and technical duties of the work unit. 

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

·       Select, train, motivate, track, assign, and oversee the work of staff; establish schedules and methods for work performed; and ensure adherence to proper workgroup procedures and policies.
·       Review organizational goals and objectives; establish and discuss job duties and performance expectations; set performance goals.
·       Recommend and assist in the implementation of organizational goals and objectives and implement policies and procedures.
·       Observe and enforce the requirements of Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations, relating to CDL license holders in the performance of safety-sensitive functions and the use and/or misuse of alcohol and controlled substances;
·       Determine equipment and supply needs; evaluate and monitor equipment performance; requisition supplies and materials; and make routine and emergency purchases as required.
·       Participate in preparation of the workgroup budget; monitor, review, approve and control expenditures including purchases; assist with writing and submitting grant applications. Coordinate workgroup activities with other divisions, other city departments, with outside agencies and volunteers.
·       Act as a support to advisory boards, commissions, and committees.
·       Operate and maintain data in various computerized systems and accurate records of work performed, hours, materials used, and associated work.
·       Administer, enter, prioritize, assign, update and evaluate service work order requests in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
·       Respond to requests and inquiries from the public.
·       Identify areas needing repair and maintenance and take corrective action.
·       Oversee and participate in all related aspects of maintenance for assigned area.
·       Develop, administer, and monitor preventative maintenance programs.
·       Schedule and supervise the testing and preventative maintenance of a variety of equipment.
·       Inspect the work of maintenance contractors, prepare inspection reports, maintain records of all areas maintained under contract, and ensure proper compliance with contract conditions.
·      

Ensure proper records, daily logs, and inventories of restricted use and/or other chemicals are in compliance with regulating agency

When Assigned To Urban Forestry:  

·       Guide planning and operations to implement the Urban Forestry Master Plan, coordinate projects involving multiple workgroups, departments, or outside agencies/groups, and assist in the development of educational materials and conduct informational workshops for staff and the public.  
·       Assist Urban Forester with community outreach programs, trainings, and events.
·       Coordinate projects, collaborate and communicate with internal and external partners.
·       Provide oversight and maintenance of the tree inventory database and coordinate resources and effectively.
·       Works with crews and independently.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Work Experience:

Requires three (3) years of experience in the maintenance of infrastructure systems, at least two (2) of which must be in assignment: parks, preserves, golf courses, baseball spring training facilities, contract oversight, volunteer oversight or facility maintenance. Two (2) years of supervisory or lead responsibility is required.

Candidates must have the minimum amount of work experience. Years of experience are based upon a full-time work schedule (2,080 hours per year).  The sum of an applicant’s full-time and/or part-time qualifying work experience must meet or exceed the stated minimum qualification. Education will not substitute for the required work experience; however, related unpaid and/or volunteer work experience may be used as qualifying work experience. 

Education:

Requires the equivalent of an associate degree supplemented by accredited technical training in a specialty related to the core duties of the position.

The term “equivalent” means that directly related work experience exceeding the required work experience will substitute in equal time increments for college-level education, for example: one year of additional directly related work experience will substitute for one year of college education (30 credit hours).

Certifications, Licenses, and/or Registrations:

Possession of a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred.  Depending on area of responsibility, possession of, or required to obtain within 180 days of hire, an Arizona Structural Pesticide Applicator License in categories 3 and 4 or a Certified Applicator Golf (PUG) in Ornamental & Turf category (B2).

When Assigned To Urban Forestry: 

Possession of or required to obtain an International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification, and TCIA Tree Care Specialist certifications obtained within the first year of hire.
