Native Tree of the Month

Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis) is putting on its full summer display across Arizona right now, with showy, trumpet-shaped blooms in shades of lavender, pink, and deep magenta. Though not a true willow, its narrow, curved leaves give it a familiar, graceful look. This adaptable native thrives in desert washes and riparian areas, and it’s a favorite for pollinators—from hummingbirds to carpenter bees. For tree care professionals, Desert Willow offers a durable, drought-tolerant option that responds well to pruning and can be trained into a small ornamental tree or allowed to grow as a multi-stemmed shrub. With proper care, it provides both aesthetic and ecological value throughout the hot, dry months when few other trees are flowering so prolifically.
