“TREES FOR THE RIM”
Facts
A Special Project of:
ARIZONA COMMUNITY TREE COUNCIL, INC.
100% of all proceeds are dedicated to restoring landscaping on residential, commercial and community lands in areas damaged by Arizona’s Rodeo-Chediski Fire during June, 2002, through the providing and planting of native trees and other re-vegetation efforts.
The Rodeo-Chediski Fire expanded over 467,000 acres in the White Mountain area of northeastern Arizona. This is the tenth largest forest fire in the United States in the last 100 hundred years and the largest forest fire in Arizona history. Of total acreage, an estimated 8,000 acres are privately owned, held by home and business owners and municipalities. Allowing for buildings sites and open space, some 4,000 acres require replanting.
Reforestation to “Fire Safe Building” standards is a key facet of the program. This revegetation effort is projected to require up to 500,000 trees and a variety of native shrubs over a span of at least five years. Due to environmental conditions, not all plantings will survive. This necessitates scheduling annual programs for 40,000 to 50,000 trees and shrubs to be planted July through October in each year of the program. Because the conditions in the Arizona mountains are much drier and warmer than that of other Western mountain areas, seed for these planting programs must come from Arizona.
- Planting of first trees scheduled for July and August of 2003
- Reseeding of native grasses projected for Summer 2002
- All administrative expenses for “ Trees For The Rim ” are by donation of goods and services or are borne by the Arizona Community Tree Council, Inc.
- Council members include volunteer representatives from all counties in Arizona, arborists, nursery owners, growers and people from the business community
- This is a People Helping People Project, with numerous volunteer opportunities available for interested groups and organizations as planting projects unfold
- Educational materials and plant care workshops are provided for tree recipients
- Information on “Fire Safe Building” will be available for tree recipients
- “Trees For The Rim” is projected as a five to seven year restoration program
- Funds remaining at the end of this program will be dedicated to planting trees in other Arizona fire areas
