Local Green Industries Receive ACTC Award
Phoenix, October 5, 2009 - On Friday, September 25, 2009, the Arizona Community Tree Council, Inc., in cooperation with the Arizona State Land Department - Urban & Community Forestry, honored 19 individual, civic, and corporate entities for their efforts which beautified the local environment with trees. These diverse projects represented many Arizona cities including:
- Tucson Electric Power company - winning in 2 categories:
- Volunteer - Participating in a Community Action Team on "National Make a Difference Day" that brought together the City of Tucson, Tucson Clean & Beautiful, Habitat for Humanity Tucson, Citibank, Cox Communications and the Arizona Daily Star to plant 100 trees in 6 different City of Tucson parks.
- Business/Public & Private Partnerships - working with Civano Plant Farm and Nursery and Tucson Clean & Beautiful on tree-related projects including a Green Waste Recycling program and city-wide tree planting events planting 1,009 trees over a year period.
Civano Plant Farm and Tucson Clean and Beautiful were also honored for their contributions to this project.
- City of Chandler Parks Department - winning in the Municipal Government Agency category for "Veteran's Oasis Park in Chandler." The City of Chandler was creative and resourceful in transplanting 256 trees during the construction and grading for Mesquite Groves Park and Aquatic Center.
- Dove Mountain Rotary Club - winning in the Civic Organizations category for their "Food Forest at Marana Farm" project. The Rotary provided a grant that established a fruit orchard at the farm. Orchard production will be managed by the Community Food Bank at the Marana Farm.
- Arizona Homegrown Solutions - winning in the Volunteer category for their collaborative "Planting for Peace" project between the Arizona Homegrown Solutions and the local Roots & Shoots children's gardening group which planted 100 trees in a Central Phoenix neighborhood.
- Children First Academy - winning in the Business/Public & Private Partnership category, 12 individuals and companies were honored for working together to landscape a school in Central Phoenix for homeless children. They were:

These prestigious awards were given out at ACTC's annual conference in front of over 200 attendees. "ACTC is proud to recognize Arizona's green initiatives," said Conni Ingallina, ACTC'S Executive Director. "We had a lot of fantastic green projects in Arizona this year. We love this trend and believe the education that we provide is really paying off for Arizona residents. We are proud of this year's winners and wish to thank every individual and business who contributed to these green efforts."
